Joe is a singer and artist in NYC. He is missing his lateral incisors congenitally. He wasn’t happy with his existing look. He wished to eat better without having to be worried when his temps will break and for sure wanted a better smile.
The space between his teeth didn’t allow us to place his implants. At EDS, with the help of various specialists under one roof we were able to reposition his teeth with braces. Preparing the Gums and Bone for Dental Implants
In many cases, dental implant surgery must start with increasing the bone density in the areas to receive implants. We use detailed 3D imaging of the bone of the upper and lower jaw to determine if this will be needed. When missing teeth have existed for several years, it is common for there to be bone loss in the upper jaw bone or lower jaw bone.
When bone loss is significant, we must complete bone graft procedures to create more bone density so there’s plenty of strong, dense bone in both jaws. A bone graft is a surgical procedure that places tiny fragments of bone in the weakened areas. These fragments cause the body to begin adding more natural bone tissue in that area.
It may also be necessary to complete a gum graft to repair gum recession in an area that’s to receive a dental implant.

The Dental Implant Procedure for a Complete Smile Replacement
Once there is sufficient, strong bone and healthy gum tissue, the following procedure may be chosen to place the dental implants and the bridges providing replacement of missing teeth:
- Select the strongest areas of bone for the placement of six dental implants in each jaw bone.
- Fully numb the upper and lower arches for the comfort of the patient.
- Precisely place six dental implants in both the upper and lower jaws.
- Send the patient home to rest, with any medication needed for pain.
- One week later, provide the patient with beautiful, temporary bridges that replace the upper and lower arches of teeth.
- Follow up with the patient as they heal and their implants bond to their jaw bones.
- When the dental implants have fully bonded with the bone (usually three months later), replace the temporary bridges with permanent, fixed replacements.
In some cases, removable bridges can be placed after this three-month healing period, offering patients a second option.
Single Dental Implant Placement
When only a single tooth is missing, we follow much the same procedure of ensuring that the bone in the area is strong, followed by placing the dental implant. Depending on where the missing tooth was located, we may be able to restore the tooth with a clean, white crown right away. We can take this step immediately when we are replacing teeth in the front of the smile.
For a tooth that is missing in the back of the mouth where chewing forces are quite intense, we need to let that dental implant heal and bond with the bone before we restore the tooth. In every procedure we do, we will use the best techniques and materials available to ensure a high quality outcome.
